Tough Mudder runs 10-12 mile muddy obstacle course events throughout the world with the tagline “Probably the toughest event on the planet”.
These events have exploded onto the UK scene in the last couple of years, with between 12,000 and 18,000 participants per weekend, and between 5,000 and 9,000 spectators. There have already been over one million participants worldwide in 3 years.

Having run it myself with 3 friends in early June 2013, I was really looking forward to a great sports massage to soothe my dodgy right leg. We crossed the finish line in good time and high spirits, but…
Low and behold! They didn’t offer such a service. A lightbulb lit above my head. Three days later, I was in negotiations with Tough Mudder UK to provide up to 24 masseurs at a time for all their UK events.
With the perfect mix of having hosted hundreds of events from large scale, A-list functions, to running therapy events; with a healthy acupuncture practice and a body that has tended to malfunction in endurance races: offering therapeutic support for Tough Mudder has been a natural fit.
Along with my business partner Pete, we’ve done the last 3 events – in Scotland, Yorkshire and Wales – with the final event on 5th-6th October in Cheshire.
Massage post-race really helps get lactic acid out of the muscles, release tight and blood-deficient muscles to restore blood flow and the restorative processes, increase recovery time and improve plasticity of tendons and ligaments. All in all, a very worthwhile and important option. Professional sports teams and athletes all hire masseurs for this among other reasons – amateur sportsmen and sportswomen deserve no less.
Here are a few photos of the massage service:
